“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
Maya Angelou

My personal experiences and my observations of creatives, both past and present, lead me to believe that Maya may be wrong in her opinion. It seems that creativity can be used up. The entire process seems to be akin to traversing a plateau.

I see it in artists of all genres. They climb up the side of the plateau, hone their abilities along the way, reach the table and create a seminal work. They continue at that level for a while and then, as though they are descending the other side of the plateau, they start to lose that creative spark. Their work, especially if they have become financially successful or have been locked into a contract, becomes “commercial”.
